Mental health and wellness continue to emerge as a new way of looking at things. A new way of looking after yourself.

There’s the ‘mind, body and soul’ movement, but mostly ‘mind’ isn’t taken to mean talking therapy or counselling. It is more seen as stilling the mind, meditating and mindfulness.

Talk to someone

mental_healthWhile I’m all for meditation and contemplation, I also strongly believe that talking to someone – a professional – also goes a long way to rebalancing and invigorating your mental health.

I’m not saying you can’t talk to friends and family and feel better. It’s just that, for some of us, friends and family may not be as objective, non-judgemental and helpful as we might want. For others, there just aren’t any trusted friends and family to talk to. Even if there are, there’s always value in seeking help from someone who is trained in talking therapy. There are a range of therapy ‘types’ that you hear about with weird and wonderful names; all with sound research and training provided to therapists. But at the end of the day, it’s all about talking.  Being listened to. Having the space to explore yourself and your relationships.

It’s good to talk.

Mental Health & Wealth

The media campaign by Heads Together highlights the fact that too often, people are afraid to admit to struggling with their mental health.

The videos revealing our HRHs (His & Her Royal Highness’ Harry, William & Catherine) discussing their bereavements and struggles with life have made ‘the conversation’ about mental health easier for many. #oktosay

The pop star Katy Perry, after 5 years of having her own personal therapy, videoed a one-off session (not with her regular therapist!) to show people some of what a therapy session may look like. Obviously! She’s a pop star. There’s a whole film crew. Live-streaming on You Tube.

This is not what you will experience when you attend a regular therapy session!

All Ms Perry is trying to get across is that people should feel comfortable with their everyday mental wellbeing and that stigma no longer prevents people getting help they need. Regardless of whether you or I like her as a pop star, person or whatever. The main point is that for some people, it is really helpful to see a public figure talking about mental health. Seeing what she does for her own well-being.
